Progress in the electromobility sector
The electromobility market remains highly charged. There are well over a million eBikes on Germany's roads already, and now the electric car market is slowly taking off as well. Although still not at 
target levels, growth figures are well over 50 percent. This year Germany licensed its ten thousandth electric car, and the number of hybrid vehicles has also reached a new record.
It is not just the automotive sector that is moving forward. Progress can also be seen in the area of power storage technologies, and the energy industry is investing across the country in projects to make the Smart Grid, the intelligent power grid of the future, a reality. The network of public charging stations to fuel these eCars is also growing: there are now more than 4,000 locations across Germany where drivers of electric vehicles can charge their batteries. At the same time, the share of renewable energies in the energy mix continues to grow steadily. They currently account for around one-fourth of German consumption, trending upward.
The flagship MobiliTec fair showcases progress in electromobility across the board. "This is the only exhibition concept that brings together every facet of electromobility, from infrastructure, renewable energies and information technology to electric and hybrid drive system engineering, and including hydrogen cell design," says Marc Siemering, Deutsche Messe Senior Vice President.
MobiliTec, sponsored by the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and its Drive Engineering Research Association (FVA), is therefore not exclusively focused on eVehicles, but presents system-based solutions for more environmentally friendly mobility in the future. Individual components as well as final products can be observed in a broad range of application areas. Issues surrounding manufacturing technology play a major role, and are properly showcased at the fair: "Market-ready electromobility does not simply fall from the sky, 
but is achieved in progressive steps. A major factor in its success is manufacturing technology, because the important building blocks for tomorrow's mobility - batteries, electric drives and lightweight construction elements - must be of high quality and also affordable.
German mechanical and facilities engineering has the expertise to provide the ideas and solutions the industry needs, which we want to highlight at MobiliTec," says Hartmut Rauen, member of the Executive Directorate of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA).

side-by-side with renewable energy offerings
Now in its fifth year of existence, MobiliTec is more than ever the central international platform networking the public sector, energy and transportation industries, supplier industry and manufacturing and research. Only together can they overcome the challenge of creating a new, sustainable mobility - in industry, trade and private life, in the country and the cities, in water and on rail, and perhaps in the more distant future also in the air.
These days renewable energies and electromobility are often mentioned in the same breath, so exhibitors at MobiliTec and the leading Energy show will be even closer together at HANNOVER MESSE 2014. For the first time, the electromobility sector and companies offering energy production sourced from wind, solar power, biogas or biomass present their concepts, products and offers under one roof in Hall 27.
The German government once again has a stand at MobiliTec, and the central MobiliTec 
Forum offers discussion rounds and specialized presentations on specific topics. Regional consortiums from the German states (Länder) also exhibit the pilot and showcase projects promoted by the government, with all four Showcase regions - Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria-Saxony, Berlin-Brandenburg and Lower Saxony - presenting the results and lessons gained so far. "A whole new dynamic is in place with the many new showcase models," says Henning Kagermann, Chair of the National Electromobility Platform (NPE) created in 2009 and President of the German Academy for Technical Sciences. "We are well on our way to becoming a leading market and leading supplier of electromobility. At the end of 2014 we complete the market preparation period and enter the ramp-up phase, so next fall the National Electromobility Platform will review where we are well positioned and where items still remain to be addressed in Germany."
The Netherlands is the HANNOVER MESSE 2014 Partner Country and the Dutch are also strongly committed to more environmentally friendly mobility. The metropolitan region of Amsterdam in particular is seeking to promote rapid expansion of electromobility. By 2015, five percent of the kilometers driven in Amsterdam should be traveled under electric power.
Current developments in many countries show that electromobility is by far not a strictly German concern. Japan is putting its efforts into electric drives by building a dense network of charging stations, and wants to reach a 20 percent share of electric vehicles for the automotive market as a whole by 2020. Norway is pursuing equally ambitious goals. The market share of electric vehicles among new vehicle purchases in Norway was already more than five percent in recent months. In the USA, electromobility is gaining unprecedented attention. This year alone, Tesla Motors sold more eCars in the United States than the total number traveling Germany's streets today.
